Workshop : Introduction to EJB3

On the 31st of May an introductory workshop will be held in Wallingford. This will provide you an opportunity to meet other developers as well as find out more about EJB3. Details of the workshop are available on the website. You can also download the information sheet.

Overview

The J2EE framework has undergone a evolutionary process, in particular the EJB aspect of it has evolved significantly. The upcoming release which is currently being drafted will be no different. Several very interesting and powerful new features have been added. Most of them are around development time and complexity. The new features seem to be targeted at making development easier allowing the developer to focus on the business logic rather than the framework.

Is this technology ready to be used yet ?

The answer to this is yes, if you are starting a new project. The many new features will allow the developers to quickly produce a vast amount of work. The basic question you have to ask yourself is, will I regret not having used this new technology once it is released ? Currently the EJB3 specification is in draft state, which means that refinements will happen, which will affect the project which uses this technology. On the other side this technology offers significant new features which can easily be set off against the time spent implementing the refinements.

Even if you are not going to utilise this new technology right now, the workshop will provide you with a good understanding of new aspects and concepts involved with the upcoming EJB3 specifications. Also the JBoss Application Server already allows for the development and deployment of EJB3, even though it is still considered a BETA release. During the workshop the examples are deployed and working using the beta release of the JBoss Application Server. This allows for the workshop to take a hands-on approach and attendees to utilise the new features immediately, rather then merely present the theoretical concepts.
